LESSON OF THE DAY 883

Ayah of the Day:
When Our signs are read to one of them, he turns away arrogantly, as if he hadn't heard, as if there were deafness in his ears; so announce a painful penalty to him. [31: 7]

Hadith of the Day:
The one who asks God for forgiveness of his sins yet continues sinning is mocking his Lord. [Bayhaqi]

Wise Quote of the Day:
The best means for the slave to reach his Master is by being constantly in need of Him in all states, adhering to the sunna in all deeds, and seeking his sustenance in lawful manner. [Abu Hafs]

Guidance of the Day:
In a day and age where there is little real threat of our freedom being attacked by foreign forces, we have become slaves. The threat is not foreign, but local. Internal. We have become our own worst enemies. The people of these modern times have become slaves to alcohol, drugs, food, gambling, violence, shopping. . . Our slavery is the result of a complex of addictions that we often refuse to acknowledge or challenge. These addictions attack and take over not only our bodies, but also our minds, spirits, and checkbooks.

Addiction is the enemy of self-discipline. Addiction is the enemy of freedom. Addiction robs us of self-discipline, freedom, and indeed our very dignity. Our lives and times are plagued and characterized by innumerable addictions. We are addicted, and inasmuch as we are addicted, we are slaves. The foundation of great nations is freedom. The foundation of freedom is not strength, but character. The foundation of character is discipline. [Kelly, The Rhythm of Life]

Food for Thought:
Be such a man, and live such a life,
That if every man were such as you,
And every life a life like yours,
This earth would be God's Paradise.
